Cairns
The city Cairns, about 1700 km from Brisbane is certainly worth a visit in combination with your snorkel or dive trip to the great barrier reef. Cairns has a recent aquarium which is nice to visit with kids. It is also worth to doing some shopping, visit the fruit and vegetable market and buy some souvenirs. Due to crocodiles you cannot swim in the sea, but the artificial lagoon makes you feel on holidays. We liked the freely accessible botanical garden a lot, if you book in advance you can get a free guided tour.
